How to Keep Your Beginning Sewer Busy During Summer Break | Beginner Sewing Tutorials

I have had the good fortune to work with some really sweet beginning sewers.  But I worry when they leave my studio they won't have a project to work on or anyone at home to help them so they'll let their sewing hobby slip to the wayside.  It doesn't have to be that way though - the web is full of great tutorials, perfectly suited to the beginning sewer.

I love the blog Skip To My Lou and use a few of her tutorials as projects for my beginners.  Her Totebag Tutorial teaches some great base skills - making handles, topstitching and creating a reversible project. Plus, once you make your first totebag, you can adapt the instructions to make any size bag you like. You can get creative and add pockets and other embellishments too!

Raising the bar a little, my standard second sewing project for beginner's is Skip To My Lou's Lined Zipper Pouch. The task of sewing a zipper can set even the most seasoned sewist quaking in their boots.  That's why it's best to get it over with your beginner - they'll never realize it was supposed to be hard. Slow and steady wins the race with a zipper, and it's a fantastic skill to have in your arsenal.

Another option to learn zippers it to take Craftsy's Mastering Zipper Techniques class - it's free. Video based options are a great way to go with a hands on skill like sewing. And if you like that format, there's alot more available on Craftsy for you {even beyond sewing, think making pizza, decorating cakes and cartoon drawing).

Speaking of video, you can't for get YouTube.  A basic search for beginner sewing projects brings up a few thousand videos. But, let me focus your focus on two stellar YouTube star resources.  There is Vanessa from The Crafty Gemini who focuses on fun and easy projects from Pillowcase Dresses to an actual video with Tips and Ideas to Teach Kids to Sew. Another YouTube favorite of mine is Missouri Star Quilt Company and while they do focus mainly on quilting they have some great projects like the Easy Tube Method Pillow Case.
